A Safe Alternative

Smith & Nephew

For women suffering from submucous fibroids or endometrial polyps, the Smith & Nephew Operative Hysteroscopy System provides a safe surgical treatment option. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis with a hysteroscope inserted through the cervix. The doctor uses a small instrument with a specially designed tip that is inserted through the hysteroscope and rapidly shaves away the growths. The system has been designed to avoid damage to the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium), which helps preserve the chances of pregnancy at a future date.

The Smith & Nephew Operative Hysteroscopy System allows the doctor to remove growths effectively using a safe mechanical process. Minimizing the procedure time helps reduce the risks of fluid overload as well as prolonged exposure to anesthesia, which means a safe surgery for the patient. Unlike most other surgical treatments, operative hysteroscopy using the Smith & Nephew System does not require the use of electricity in the uterus. As a result, the risk of thermal (heat) injury to the lining of the uterus is eliminated and the doctor is able to maintain a clear field of view during the entire surgery. These characteristics provide benefits of safety to the patient.

Based on the specifics of your own medical condition, your doctor will determine which treatment options are available to you. The remainder of this brochure provides further information about operative hysterosopy using the Smith & Nephew System and what to expect before, during and following the procedure.
