Lifestyle tips for healthy knees
While you may need medical treatment for your knee pain, you can also make some changes to your lifestyle to help protect against knee pain or help you live with it. Below you will find some of these tips. For more tips, visit arthritis.org.
- Lose weight—A small weight loss can lead to a big reduction in knee stress1
- Joint exercises—Keep your joints and muscles in shape to prevent and ease knee pain1
- Eat healthy—Proper nutrition has been shown to help prevent knee pain. Make sure your diet includes foods high in vitamins C and D and antioxidants1
- Quit smoking—Smoking has been shown to lead to joint pain, as well as to other ailments1
- Get a massage—The stimulation of blood flow can both soothe and prevent knee pain1
- Wear appropriate footwear—Comfortable, well-fitting shoes can help reduce the stress on your joints2
- Brace yourself—Devices such as braces or orthotic insoles can help relieve pressure and stress on your joints3
