Prior to undergoing any surgical procedures, your physician may recommend nonoperative, conservative options for treating your low back pain. They include the following:
- Both cold and hot therapy can provide relief to back pain sufferers. Ice or cold packs can be used to reduce inflammation and heat can be applied to increase flexibility.
- Medications may also be prescribed to help manage pain. Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs, also known as NSAIDs are routinely given to reduce swelling. In some cases, a muscle relaxant may also be given to alleviate a muscle spasm. Narcotic painkillers can also be used to alleviate intense but short-lived pain. Please note, however, that all medications have risks and should be taken only in consultation with your pharmacist and physician.
- Physical therapy may include a combination of treatments to decrease pain, increase flexibility, and strengthen the muscles of the back. This will consist of a regimen that combines massage therapy, exercise and stretching.
