Instruments and technique
The way a device is implanted is as critical as its design. The two surgeons who developed the BIRMINGHAM HIP◊ put a lot of thought and evaluation into this area as well. Combined between them these surgeons have implanted over 7000 resurfacings, all with a consistent technique. Every surgeon is taught this technique. In addition to the initial detailed training provided to surgeons, they have opportunities to enhance their training with follow-up visits, additional practice sessions, and medical education courses.
Proper training has shown that there is limited effect of a learning curve using the BIRMINGHAM HIP◊ Technique. Shimmin, et al, in evaluating their learning curve, demonstrated limited clinical complications in their first 200 cases(7).
The instruments have been developed to facilitate accurate placement of the components. When combined with the proper technique, accurate placement is easily achieved. The instruments have been upgraded and improved over time, but the ability to properly align the implants has been maintained and improved, facilitating the surgeons’ use of the proper technique.
