How EXOGEN Works

The EXOGEN system emits low-intensity, pulsed ultrasound waves which has been shown in laboratory tests to stimulate the bone’s natural healing process. These waves move through your skin and soft tissue to penetrate the bone at the fracture site.

Early: The waves encourage cells to remove debris and bacteria.
Middle: The pulses stimulate the bone marrow to produce immature bone cells and cartilage cells. These two types of cells are essential to bone regrowth
Late: The pulsed waves stimulate the membrane around the bone to seal up the fracture so that immature bone cells can collect and grow. The ultrasound signals also encourage the newly formed bone cells to mature more rapidly.

		Mechanical pressure waves move through the skin and soft tissue.

		Cell receptors, known as integrins, receive EXOGEN’s ultrasound signal and are activated.

		Integrins begin to cluster.

		This clustering starts an intra-cellular cascade during which molecules that regulate gene expression (process by which inheritable information from a gene, such as the DNA sequence, is made into a functional gene product, such as protein) are stimulated and move into the nucleus to perform their function.

		The result is increased protein expression which is critical to the bone healing process.
