Whether you are proud of your prize-winning roses or obsessed about your home-grown tomatoes, your knee pain shouldn’t slow down your green thumb.
Here are some arthritis-friendly gardening tips from the Arthritis Foundation:1
- Check with your doctor or physical therapist to get advice about any special aids or adaptive tools, like a brace, that might help you.
- Plan to garden during the time of day when you feel best.
- Organize your garden for easier tending by keeping your tools and water source near by. Use a hose caddy and water with a sprinkler.
- When gardening, reduce stress on your joints by using tools with long handles.
- If you need to get close to the ground, place only one knee on the ground and keep your back straight, or use a stool.
- Use a cushioned garden mat when kneeling.
- Wear a carpenter’s apron to carry frequently-used tools
- Choose low-maintenance plants
