The JOURNEY◊ Knee has been carefully engineered to be anatomically correct, based on extensive data. Smaller sizes are contoured to reflect the smaller scale of women’s knees. Contours of the larger sizes mirror the broader knee anatomy of men. The result is a knee that most closely mimics the original knee’s shapes and function, resulting in a more natural feel.
A man’s thighbone is longer and extends farther, making the man’s knee thicker from front to back than a woman’s knee. The JOURNEY◊ Knee is shaped, scaled and contoured to reflect those differences. With a more anatomically correct fit, you are less likely to experience stiffness and pain when bending.
Even accounting for differences in height, women’s knees are narrower than men’s when measuring from side to side. To achieve an optimal side-to-side fit, the JOURNEY◊ Knee has been designed and engineered to accommodate these unique aspects of male and female anatomy.
Women’s and men’s hips have different widths, which greatly impacts the angle at which your knee joins. The JOURNEY◊ Knee is designed to achieve the optimum angle for each gender so that leg extension and bending feels natural and pain-free.
If you could look at a cross-section of the top of your tibia (shinbone), you would see that it is asymmetric in shape. The JOURNEY◊ Knee is the only knee replacement that offers an asymmetric tibial base plate to accurately match the tibia bone’s shape, resulting in a more true fit.
With other knee replacements the base plate that fits on the tibia is symmetric, not conforming to your knee’s true shape. Consequently as much as 20% of the tibial bone is exposed and not covered by the base plate.
