IMPACTION Grafting has been proposed as a method for improving the durability and reliability of cementing femoral components in revision total hip surgery. Short-term results using this technique have been encouraging. The proposed advantages of cementing femoral implants into impacted cancellous graft are:

  • Immediate rigid fixation of implants
  • Restoration of bone stock
  • Positive bone remodeling
  • Simplification of implant selection and instrumentation
  • A standardized and reproducible surgical technique

In order to achieve these advantages, an IMPACTION Grafting technique must be:

  • Safe
  • Reproducible
  • Consistent in the preparation and insertion of bone graft
  • Adaptable to a wide range of implant lengths and head-neck offsets
  • Cost efficient

The Radial Impaction Grafting (RIG) technique was developed to achieve the following objectives:

  • Maximize the impaction of morselized cancellous graft
  • Minimize the likelihood of early and late femoral fractures
  • Permit the use of stems of variable lengths and head-neck offsets
