Gauze Dressing Kits

Dressing Application - Sterile Gauze
Step 1
Cleanse wound bed and pat dry per protocol. Do not apply NO-STING SKIN-PREP
◊ directly onto open wound.
Step 2
Apply skin sealant to periwound area.
Not included as part of Basic Sterile Kit.
Step 3
Trim single layer of non-adherent gauze and lay across wound bed.
Not included as part of Basic Sterile Kit.
Step 4
Cut the drain approximately 1” (2.5cm) shorter than the base of the wound.
Step 5

Apply layer of saline-moistened antimicrobial gauze to wound bed. Position drain on top of gauze. For channel drain, wrap layer of gauze around drain.
CAUTION: it is critical that the gauze is moistened with normal saline prior to filling the wound.
Step 6
Secure the drain in place.
Step 7
Fill wound with saline-moistened antimicrobial gauze. Gauze should loosely fill to surface of wound. Avoid overpacking.
Saline not included as part of Basic Sterile Kit.
Step 8
Place transparent dressing over the wound and seal.
Step 9
Secure the drain tubing with waterproof tape.
Step 10
Connect the drain to the canister and begin suction, ensuring canister is installed correctly.
Finished Dressing
Will have a “raisin-like” appearance and be firm to the touch.
WARNING: The drain should never be placed in an unexplored fistula tract.
Dressing Changes
The Dressing Kit should be changed every 48 hours after the initial application of therapy.
Dressing Application - Non-Sterile Gauze
Step 1
Cleanse wound bed and pat dry per protocol.
Step 2
Apply skin sealant to periwound area.
Step 3

Trim single layer of Non-Adherent Gauze and lay across wound bed.
Step 4

Moisten gauze with saline. Place a layer of moistened gauze into wound bed.
Step 5
If required, cut drain to fit wound dimensions. As a guide, the drain should be at least 1 inch shorter than the wound size.
Step 6
Secure drain using strip paste beneath and on top of drain as shown.
Step 7
Fill remaining wound defect with additional moistened gauze.
Step 8
Cover wound and drain with drape approximately 2-3 inches overlap onto surrounding skin.
Step 9

Secure drain as it exits the transparent film using the "Chevron" technique.
Step 10

Attach wound to canister. Connect blue tip of tubing to canister (Patient port on 800cc canister and "in" or "B" port on 250cc canister).
Step 11

Connect drain tube to "Christmas tree" adaptor.
Step 12
Ensure clamps are open. Adjust pump to desired pressure setting and turn on device. Dressing should contract leaving a wrinkled appearance and be hard to the touch.
Dressing Changes
The Wound Dressing Kit should be changed 48 hours after the initial application of therapy.
