C-Section Infection Reduction Program: A multi-faceted approach reduces complications, readmissions and cost; improves outcomes

Description

Surgical site complications drain healthcare resources and are costly in both clinical and economic terms. The management of surgical site complications can be especially challenging in high-risk patients with multiple comorbidities and may lead to increased costs, length of stay and readmission rates. The Affordable Care Act shifts more accountability for reduced complication and readmission rates onto individual healthcare providers.

A new post-surgical protocol was implemented to reduce surgical site complications and infections in the OB/GYN department of MultiCare Health System in Tacoma, WA. Post-implementation, SSIs were reduced by 96% and the system realized an estimated cost savings of over $5,000,000 from reductions in readmission rates.

Objectives

  • Learn how challenges were overcome to implement this innovative bundled approach for high- and low-risk patients
  • Understand how a change in the post-operative incisional approach impacted the program’s success
  • Discuss how readmissions were avoided, related cost savings were realized, and patient satisfaction was improved
