People Principles
People principles
Our relationships with employees are based on respect for the individual and the same set of principles worldwide:
- No discrimination on any grounds. We will only succeed long-term if we select, retain and develop people to provide the full range of skills and abilities we need at every level.
- Equality of opportunity. This is the basis for all our recruitment, job-posting, appraisal, development and pay policies. For example, in South Africa we run an educational scheme which is open to all who wish to improve their educational qualifications at any level.
- Open, competitive access to career development opportunities, both lateral and promotional. We practise open advertising - local, national and international - and regular appraisals. We provide people at all levels with training throughout their careers, and give support to people who want to gain additional qualifications.
- Selection, training and development processes that make the most of individuals' talents, skills and abilities. Over time we have developed and refined a list of the competencies required at various career stages - and integrated this with personal development reviews and training plans.
- Safe and healthy working conditions. Apart from our natural desire to provide good working environments that meet national standards, we are open to audit by customers and regulatory authorities. We regularly win safety awards.
- An open, challenging and participative environment. Among the ways in which we aim to achieve this are open job postings, continuous two-way communication including information on key business measures, regular appraisals and visits from customers and suppliers.
