 1931
  • Smith & Nephew (Pty) Ltd, Durban S.A. set up.
 
 1930
  • Plaster of Paris bandages were launched (GYPSONA).
 
1928
  • The development of ELASTOPLAST began.
 
1921
  • The Canadian branch was established as a separate company.
 
1914/1918
  • Expansion to fulfill the needs of the war years led to staff numbers increasing from 50 to over 1,200.
 
1906
  • First overseas contracts were secured with Canadian Hospital Authorities.
 
1896
  • Horatio Nelson Smith, the founder's nephew, entered into partnership with his uncle and the firm became known as T.J. Smith and Nephew. He began to develop medical dressings.
 
1856
  • Thomas James Smith opened a pharmaceutical chemist shop in Hull, England.
