- A further joint venture with B. Braun Melsungen was begun, this time in Switzerland.
- The remaining 50% of Smith & Nephew Orbel S.p.A., Italy was purchased.
- United Medical Division of Pfizer Hospital Products Inc. in Florida was acquired, manufacturers of special surgical dressings. Later to become Smith & Nephew's US wound management division, which has spearheaded the Group’s development of its US wound dressing business.
