  • Purchased the Albion Group Limited, manufacturers of the Simple range of "additive free" toiletries.
  • A further joint venture with B. Braun Melsungen was begun, this time in Switzerland.
  • The remaining 50% of Smith & Nephew Orbel S.p.A., Italy was purchased.
  • United Medical Division of Pfizer Hospital Products Inc. in Florida was acquired, manufacturers of special surgical dressings. Later to become Smith & Nephew's US wound management division, which has spearheaded the Group’s development of its US wound dressing business.
 
 1987
  • California based DONJOY Inc., specialising in the prevention and treatment of sports injuries was purchased.
  • Acquisitions in France of Cogemo S.A., manufacturers of continuous passive motion machines, and Sanortho S.A., a leading manufacturer of general orthopaedic implants.
  • Over £100m profit threshold passed (£109.6m).
 
 1986
  • Richards Medical Company is purchased, leaders in many orthopaedic fields. The largest single acquisition to date - £201 million pounds. With this acquisition Smith & Nephew became a major force in the US medical market.
  • Dyonics purchased, world leading postoperative arthroscopic equipment manufacturer based near Boston in US.
 
 1985
  • A joint venture was set up in Germany with B. Braun GmbH to distribute medical Healthcare products in Germany.
 
 1984
  • Smith & Nephew Iberica S.A. in Spain became a wholly owned subsidiary.
 
 1983
  • Rolyan acquired, US based rehabilitation products company.
 
 1981
  • Smith and Nephew establish companies in West Germany and Holland.
 
 1980
  • Laboratoires Fisch S.A. of France became a wholly owned subsidiary.
