The HSE Steering Group is a sub group of the Group Operations Council. It comprises the Senior Vice Presidents and HSE Managers from each Business. In addition, Managers from Research and Legal Affairs are part of the Steering Group to provide expertise and a global perspective in these important areas.

The Steering Group's close connection with the Group Operations Council recognises that it is the technical operations which have the greatest impact on the Group HSE performance.

The HSE Steering Group objectives are:

  1. To provide the information and advice on HSE performance needed by the GEC to fulfil its duties of good corporate governance.
  2. To help identify appropriate Group HSE objectives, targets and measures to be recommended to the GEC for adoption.
  3. To agree a common format of HSE reports and indicators for use by the GEC.
  4. To provide the framework for HSE audits within the Group.
  5. To facilitate the exchanges of HSE good practice within the Group.
  6. To promote HSE achievement internally and externally.
  7. To identify any impending HSE legislation or concerns that might impact Smith & Nephew.
