We have identified a number of Group Significant Technologies. With possible applications across our Group Business Units, they appear to offer us the greatest potential for sustained competitive advantage. In a number of cases they have already, in their early phases of exploitation, been translated into end products.

Three of these technologies are the focus of our Enabling Technologies research programme, which is based at the Smith & Nephew Research Centre in York, England and at selected international academic centres.

These focus technologies are:

  • Novel bioresorbable polymers
  • Tissue or cell engineering
  • Non-invasive stimulation

In York, the Enabling Technologies group is located alongside research groups from each of the Group Business Units – ensuring close collaboration and the efficient transfer of these platform technologies into product development pipelines.
