Each year, approximately 500,000 total hip replacement surgeries are performed worldwide. These procedures are normally performed on patients who are in great pain due to osteoarthritis or who have fallen and suffered a broken hip. Smith & Nephew addresses this market with an advanced portfolio of hip replacement options. Two of the most successful and fastest growing Smith & Nephew hip systems are SYNERGY◊ and ECHELON◊.

The Synergy hip was introduced in 1997 as a next generation tapered hip system. SYNERGY◊ goes beyond the design of past tapered implants with its stem geometry, choice of surface treatments, neck design, dual offsets, and efficient, easy-to-use instrumentation.

SYNERGY◊ provides the surgeon cementless, cemented and fracture management systems that use the same two trays of instrumentation. The cementless system offers the option of a porous stem, a hydroxyapatite (HA) stem, an HA on porous stem and a titanium press fit stem for different indications and surgeon preference.

The ECHELON◊ hip is a comprehensive femoral implant system addressing primary and revision hip surgery. A wide range of sizes and variations are designed to provide optimum fit to meet the needs of different patients. Cementless and cemented options also help surgeons address a variety of indications.

The instrumentation for SYNERGY◊ and ECHELON◊ has been designed to be simple and effective. This innovation in design means that surgeons can operate more efficiently and the hospital has less inventory to store. Furthermore, surgeons and hospitals are able to meet the needs of a greater number of patients due to less operating time for each patient.
