Hip System
The PLATFORM◊ Hip System is a rectangular cross section, dual taper straight stem for uncemented use. It combines over 20 years of clinical experience with the ZweymullerTM type hip prosthesis.
The PLATFORM◊ Hip System is the latest generation in “ZweymullerTM” type designs. The first generation stem was used in 1979, known as the “Hochgezogan” (Sulzer), and had a rectangular cross section. Since then there have been several variations on the original design each offering an improvement over the original. The PLATFORM◊ Hip System from Smith & Nephew utilises many of the attributes of the original and improved versions of a rectangular cross section and dual taper straight stem. Due to this combination, we are able to benefit from a proven clinical heritage whilst improving the neck geometry.
The PLATFORM◊ Hip System may be used with all Smith & Nephew heads, including the innovative OXINIUM◊ femoral head and the more classic Ceramic and Co-Cr heads. Each surgeon using the PLATFORM◊ Hip System can tailor the operation to best suit the individual patient and surgeon requirements.
Distally, the stem geometry is very similar to the original square stem design philosophy. However, above the resection line, the Smith & Nephew circulotrapezoidal neck geometry and surface finish is identical to the SYNERGY◊ hip. This gives an excellent range of motion. With the PLATFORM◊ Hip System, a single rasp is used to trial the bone bed for either standard or high offset stems, reducing inventory and theatre time.
A range of sizes are available in two offset options to closely match the patient’s anatomy (25 stems in total). Ten sizes in the standard offset version and nine in the high offset version, with four further sizes optionally. Each stem size has a matching rasp, and intra-operative trial reduction is achieved without removal of the rasp, through modular trial necks. The instrumentation is efficient and simple to use, and is provided in two sequentially laid out trays.
