Smith & Nephew announces agreement with Coloplast to launch REPLICARE hydrocolloid dressing in Japan

8 September 2008

The Advanced Wound Management division of Smith & Nephew plc (LSE: SN; NYSE:SNN) announced that it has entered into a licence agreement with Coloplast for the Smith & Nephew Wound Management KK business to sell REPLICARE hydrocolloid dressing for the professional wound care market in Japan.

The agreement provides for Coloplast to supply its Comfeel technology hydrocolloid dressings to Smith & Nephew for an initial 3 year period, during which there is the opportunity to further increase the range of products to be sold into Japan.

REPLICARE is a hydrocolloid dressing covered with polyurethane film on its surface. When a hydrocolloid dressing absorbs exudate, it creates a moist wound environment on the wound surface with the hydrophilic polymer turning into a cohesive gel. This dressing is very flexible and can be applied to any part of the body.

REPLICARE has a split back system on the release paper, enabling easy application, even when wearing gloves.  The self adhesive nature of the product enables application with a single hand.

Roger Teasdale, Senior Vice President of Smith & Nephew Advanced Wound Care Strategic Business Unit said, "This is an extension of business to a long established relationship that we have had with Coloplast.  The use of REPLICARE dressings in Japan will enable us to offer a more complete range of medical dressing solutions to our customers than any of our competitors, providing the best treatment options for wounds to both clinicians and patients."
